BULLEID POST-WAR ALL-STEEL 4-SUB UNITS 4111-4754

Following many requests, we have now introduced kits to cover the various production versions of the 4-Subs. It has taken some time: it was not that we didn’t want to produce a kit – or that we didn’t have most of the tooling - just that a lot of research was required to confirm the many variations between the different batches! The different kits should cover almost all the units, at most times in their careers from introduction to withdrawal, but we can’t yet vouch for every vehicle substitution or detail change that took place over the years. However, if you wish to model a particular unit at a particular date, please let us know, and we will check our data to see if any detail differences applied.

For almost forty years, these units were the mainstay of Southern suburban services. They worked across all three divisions of the suburban network, and could be found as far from London as Portsmouth or Brighton. They gave reliable if uninspiring service, being relatively unaffected by leaves on the line, the wrong type of snow etc., with the last two units in normal operation in 1983. However, following withdrawal and modification, a number of ‘Sub’ trailer coaches saw further service through the 1980s in re-furbished 4-EPB units.

These units follow our standard format, and include pre-formed aluminium body shells. Those who have built our kits will know that these are fully formed, and require no further shaping except for the odd ‘tweak’ between the fingers to ensure a perfect fit to the cast ends. Being in one piece, there are no joins to disguise between the sides and roof, so the distinctive profile is very well portrayed. However, access to the inside is possible at any time, simply by un-bolting the floor, which is held in place by two 8BA screws.

Motor coach floors and bogie centres are pre-formed brass etchings, and trailer coach floors are aluminium, while ends, bogie sides and roof fittings are in whitemetal. Rainstrips, footboards, inner couplings, and door fittings are all etched brass. Detailed whitemetal castings are included for all the major underfloor components, cast pins locating accurately in holes in the floors. Jigs are included for scribing door outlines, and for drilling / marking the body shells for all door fittings. Truss-rods are milled brass angle, pre cut and formed to the correct angle. Self-adhesive templates are provided to locate all the roof fittings, while a set of scale drawings show the vehicles as completed. Brass wire and split pins are included for the roof-mounted conduits. Glazing material is also included, while a printed interior kit will be available separately. Requires one ‘Black Beetle” motor bogie (35mm or 36mm wheelbase), 14mm wheels, pinpoint bearings, scale couplings for the outer ends of the unit, plus paint, transfers, adhesives, and the usual hand tools.
