Our philosophy

We aim to provide the 4mm modeller with a range of kits which can be easily assembled, to produce models which are authentic, well-balanced, and smooth-running.

We have concentrated on supplying accurately made quality components, ensuring the minimum of filling and filing. We have also tried to include all the major components, rather than expect the customer to fabricate them from a lump of plasticard, or to purchase them separately. In addition, careful choice of materials has allowed us to cater for a wide variety of bogies, ends, and fittings, rather than generic parts as used by other manufacturers. This allows everyone to produce an accurate, complete model; while those wishing to super-detail simply add the extra details of their choice.

We do not subscribe to the idea of letting the manufacturing processes dictate the design of the kit. Instead, we have chosen the most suitable techniques for each component, rather than compromise accuracy and assembly to suit a standard set of parts, or method of manufacture.

We have tried to keep assembly simple to make it possible to finish the model quickly. We have not tried to produce the most complex kits on the market, nor have we included difficult to assemble multi-part components for items that won't be seen when the model is finished; hence our name.

General specification

Kits consist of formed 1-piece body shells, usually in aluminium, (though some use etched brass) with whitemetal ends and fittings. Pre-formed etchings are provided for motor coach floors, and frames for the truss-rods on trailer cars (where applicable). Pins on the cast whitemetal underfloor fittings locate in holes in the etchings, giving accurate location and alignment. Sections of the motor coach floors are raised to simplify motorisation, and motor bogie centres are pre-formed etchings which fit easily on the ready-assembled motor bogies (to be purchased separately); alternatively, motor bogie centres may be fitted with pin-point bearings, and built un-powered. All bogie sides are cosmetic castings. Truss-rods (where supplied) are milled brass angle, again pre-formed. Trailer coach floors are usually aluminium pressings, cut to length. Etched door/grab handles and hinges are supplied, together with assorted jigs for scribing door outlines, and for drilling for door fittings. Self-adhesive paper templates are also provided where necessary for positioning roof fittings etc. Glazing material is included, and where applicable, "Flushglaze" cab windows are supplied.

Full written instructions and drawings are provided, together with historical notes, information on coach and unit numbers, and livery details

Wheels and motor bogies are not included. All multiple units are designed to use black Beetle motor units; 8'- 9" or 9’– 0” (14mm wheels) for EMUs, 8'- 6" (12mm wheels) for DMUs. Trailing bogies accept most makes of 14mm or 12mm wheels, and require standard top-hat bearings for free running.

Kits are designed for easy assembly using epoxy and cyanoacrylate adhesives, and should be within the capability of any modeller who can put together a plastic kit. Only basic tools are needed - pliers, a sharp knife, small screwdriver, assorted needle files, fine wet-and-dry paper, and assorted small drills. Those who prefer to solder may assemble most of the motor coach underframes thus, but adhesive will be required to fix whitemetal ends to aluminium shells.

A little soldering will be necessary only if additional pick-ups are to be fitted; materials for this are not included, but can be supplied. Truss-rods may also be soldered to their supports - rather than glued - for additional strength.

As with all kits, adhesive, paints and transfers are also required. Being all-metal, these kits are suitable for painting with cellulose or acrylic aerosol paints (i.e. car spray paints) as well as enamels
